Introduction
This is a continuation of back and forth with Google Gemini I had while trying to grow the tiniest type of bonsai: mame (pronounced mah-meh). I had tried and failed before, but maybe this time would be different. See Part 1 and Part 2 for the story so far.
This is the shortest installment, because I only had one prompt for Gemini. It wasn’t even a question, and I took a 23 hour break before I spoke of this matter with Gemini again. It’s not a long break in plant time.
Disaster
Me 8/5/2026 3:36 PM: The sempervivum in a mame pot was nearly destroyed by rain. Most of the leaves fell off, the substrate was disturbed and partly spilled, but the nubby core was intact. I topped off the substrate and will continue to bottom water to encourage root growth but the energy reserves of the leaves are no longer available
Gemini: That is a painful set of circumstances, but the good news is that the "nubby core" (the apical stem/caudex) is intact.
For a Sempervivum, that dense central stem is the true heart of the plant. It stores energy, contains the growing point (meristem), and retains the capacity to push both new root initial cells and new miniature leaves—even when stripped down to a bare nub.
Because the leaf reserves are gone, your primary goal flips from growing roots to preventing rot while it rebuilds its green solar panels.
Here is how the recovery physics change for a leafless stem, and how to adjust your care to bring it back:
1. Lower the Water Intake Immediately
When the plant had a full rosette of leaves, it was actively transpiring (evaporating water through its leaves) and pulling that 12g of moisture up out of the substrate.
Without leaves, transpiration drops to nearly zero. The soil will stay wet for significantly longer than it did before.
Do NOT Water on the Old 2-to-4 Day Schedule: If you bottom-soak it as often as you did when it had full leaves, that bare stub will sit in stagnant moisture and rot.
Wait for Full Dryness (92g Target): Rely strictly on your dry baseline weight (around 92g). Only give it a quick bottom-soak when the pot is completely bone-dry.
Shorten the Soak Time: Instead of a 30-to-60 second soak, give it just a brief 10-to-15 second dip—just enough to dampen the lower half of the mix via capillary action. Let the top surrounding the stub stay relatively dry to prevent fungal growth on the wounds where the leaves snapped off.
2. Shift Environmental Conditions (Shade & Airflow)
Now that the leaves are gone, the core is vulnerable to overheating and fungal infection:
Bright, Indirect Light Only: Keep it entirely out of direct midday sun. Direct sun on an unshaded, leafless stem in August heat can scorch the bare stem tissue. Place it where it receives bright ambient light or soft morning sun.
Max Air Circulation: Keep it outdoors in an open, breezy spot (protected from rain!). Air movement around the gritty aggregate will help excess moisture evaporate naturally from the pot since the plant can't suck it up.
3. How It Rebuilds: What to Expect Next
Because Sempervivums are extremely tough alpine survivors, here is how the stem will reallocate its internal reserves over the next 2 to 4 weeks:
Callousing the Leaf Scars: Over the next few days, the small "scars" where the leaves snapped off will dry out and seal up.
Pushing Tiny Leaf Buds: Within 2 to 3 weeks, you will see microscopic, bright-green pinpricks emerging directly from the top center of the nubby stem.
Re-establishing Roots: Once those tiny new leaf tips unfurl and start photosynthesizing, the plant will signal the stem base to push fine root hairs into the fresh perlite.
The Immediate Playbook
Check the pot weight right now. If the spilled/topped-off mix is still damp from the rain event, do not water at all.
Let the substrate dry out completely until it feels weightless.
Keep your top-wire or a light pin in place so the bare core remains completely immobile against the fresh perlite.
It’s down to its bare survival core, but as long as that stem stays firm and doesn't get waterlogged, Sempervivum stems are built specifically to endure and flush back out from total defoliation!
Conclusion
Gemini seems to be wrapping helpful, high-quality knowledge inside trite platitudes and bias-confirming pep talks. This feels exactly like what we were warned about in the entire genre of science fiction. I miss the smell of old books.
